Natural Ways to Fight Stubborn Finger/Toenail Fungus
Just like any other type of bacteria, fungi are multinucleate organisms that are present in all parts of our bodies. Once these organisms start to overgrow, they can turn into an infectious disease that can be treated in various ways depending on the case and area. Onychomycosis refers to the fungal disease that appear on your finger or toe nails, causing them to become crusty, thick, discolored and distorted. Since fungi develops gradually, the smartest thing to do is to seek remedy as soon as you visibly notice a change on the surface of your nail.
Below are 6 effective home remedies in which you can naturally cure your nails from any fungal disease:
Due to its pH level, vinegar is known as a natural fungicide that can easily destroy fungus infections. Mix equal parts of white vinegar (or apple cider vinegar) with warm water. Soak the affected nail(s) twice on daily basis for 20-30 mins until all signs of fungi are gone.
2- Tea Tree Oil/ Oregano Oil with Lavender Oil
Tea tree & oregano oil are natural antiseptics that are highly recommended to kill & prevent the growth of bacterial infections. On the other hand, lavender oil is a soothing component that will reduce any possible skin irritation. Take a drop or two of the tea tree/ oregano oil and mix it with an equal amount of lavender oil. Gently rub the mixture on to the infected area of the nail until all symptoms disappear. This remedy can be applied twice on daily basis.
Bleach or “sodium hypochlorite” is made up of chemical substances that can dissolve the nail fungi, causing them to disappear. Prepare a bleach soak using two cups of liquid bleach or 1 tbsp. of bleach with half a bucket of water. Soak the infected nail(s) twice a day for 15-20 mins and results are expected to show in 4-6 weeks.
4- Green Tea Extract
Apart from being an excellent anti-oxidant, green tea also consists of anti-fungal properties that cure and protect the body from fungus and other infections. Dip a green tea bag in warm water and later soak your infected nail(s) for 15-20 mins. Moreover, drinking green tea twice a day can greatly assist in getting rid of any contamination.
Garlic is one of the strongest anti-fungal agents that can effectively destroy the growth of fungus. Although this may sound unpleasant, crush 2-3 pods of raw garlic and apply on the infected nail, as well as, around the skin. Next, tie a medical gauze over the area and allow it to sit in for 2 hours. Repeat this treatment twice a day for 3 weeks.
6- Vicks (VapoRub)
The ingredients found in Vicks such as menthol, camphor and eucalyptus oil combine together to form a strong fungicide that helps clean and cure fungal infections. Use a cotton Q-tip to apply some of the product on to the nail and under the loose nail edge. Wrap that area with a Band-Aid and keep it for as long as you can (8 hours approx.). Continue this treatment for a couple of months until you reach the desired result.
Notes for home remedies:
- Any remedy applied directly to the nail will work more effectively if the infected part of the nail is cut/removed. The healthy nail will grow back in 6-12 months.
- The infected part of the nail may turn black with any of these remedies, but that change is not permanent. On the other hand, the healthy part of the nail is usually not affected.
- Since fungus likes to live in moist environments, always make sure that your hands, feet, shoes & socks are well dried. Also, cotton socks are highly recommended in the healing period.
